Breast lumps? what is good, what is bad?

Recommended Posts

hi

just went for a check up as i thought i found a lump on my breast...

the gynae said that she thinks its nothing to worry about, and that it is likely i just have a lumpy breast tissue. she did mention that if i want to be surer, to go and check out with ultrasound but her clinic don't have.. should i, or should i not check it further? anyone has any experience here? :(

are there any other signs/symptoms that i need to watch out for? am scared of breast cancer lar since i started menstruation early, and thats one of the risk factors...

A lump is not the breast cancer if u know it early as u can cure it before it was too late. this was happened to me before. i found my lump when i was in my 1st yr diploma which i was 2 yrs ago. then i go for medical check up. the dr also insisted me to go for ultrasound in order to get the result. so i go for it. as a result, i found that i got 2 lumps on both of my breast. So i went for operation. Besides the dr also suggest me to go medical checkup every yr. then last 2 months, i go for my medical checkup. i found that there is 1 thickening tissue in the same place on one of the breast. i was so afraid again. but then the dr gave me some medicine to 'reduce' the size of the tissue.

For me, i think u shud go to check...sometimes it might be water accummulate in yr breast. so if that, u dun have to worry.....

nowadays breast cancer is not uncommon. for your info, every one out of four, YES 1 out of 4, females will have some sort of cancer in their lives according to a stats.

my auntie was diagnosed with breast cancer about 2 years back and thank god it was at its early stage and wasn't really life threatening. she managed to get it removed and was lucky enough the cost was covered by insurance company.

since you've discovered this and to clear your doubt entirely, you should go and seek for thorough check up.

nowadays there are lots of insurance company offering plans to protect female species and i think it's worth looking into.

for those who are currently working already and can support themselves, it's best to enroll into such plans before it's too late.

best of luck!

hi,

when u found a lump in ur breast...go for check up. there's a triple assessment for a breast lump.

1) doctor will ask the history of ur lumps and do a physical examination on it.

2) then he'll ask for radiological investigation, which is ultrasound for age <35 and mammogram for age >40

3) if in radiological investigation, we find a mass that's suspicious, we'll do a FNAC(fine needle aspiration biopsy and cytology)....

i'll strongly recommend u to go for ultrasound and FNAC......as nowadays, breast ca is very very common and it did occur in younger age grp nowadays. and it'll be better for us to confirm it earlier....

hope it helps!

hey thanks for the feedback...

looks like its better i go and check further.. was told by a friend to go for mammo, but then i thot i heard the doctor said `ultrasound'..but guess Sharvyn's explaination says it best, if < 35, go for ultrasound, if not, then only mammo...

i m still < 35... so, ultrasound it is!

hi there,

I had lumps on my breast and had them remove.

What you have is probably a fibroedonoma

http://www.emedicine.com/radio/topic109.htm

Do not worry too much about it. I do know how you feel though.

The procedures which I went through were, checks by 2 separate doctors, an ultrasound and a biopsy.

Then I was advised to remove it because I had it for about a year and it was growing. Most Fibroedonoma dissappear but since mine was growing and because it increases the risk of breast cancer I had to get the surgery done.

My doctors were all here in Australia but because my parents were in M'sia I went back for the surgery.

After surgery I was told I actually had two fibroids!! They even showed it to me and good lord it was HUGE! Normally it is just a day surgery but because of my reaction to the anaesthetic I was advised to stay the night.

My surgeon was at Pantai Hospital. And I might add....the areola where he cut in has healed up pretty well!

Good luck :)

yeap, young gals (age 16-25) tend to have fibroadenoma than having a real cancer. fibroadenoma will dissapear within 2 years in 20% of patients . some of them will stay there for years n decades. it's ok if it does not increase in size, n does not cause symptoms, (pain, uncomfortable, scare). it's a LONG TERM risk factor for a fibro to change to a cancer. the LONG TERM really means long ..... 40-50 years later!!!! example: if u have fibroadenoma at the age of 20.......till the age of 60-70...only it may change to be a cancer...'IF' the fibro is still there at that time. so, need no worry too much of that. but if it's increasing in size, or u have encounter pain, or nipple discharge or u really feel uneasy and annoying having it...we'll normally do triple assessment as i mentioned above n surgical intervention might be needed!

if the fibroadenoma is near the areola, surgeon will have a incision at the margin/edge of the aroela n take the thing out. so, u won't really see a obvious scar on ur breast. ( i think sass-o is one of those case). however, if the fibroadenoma is farer from areola, we have to cut it thru skin of the breast, n it might leave a visible scar. but whatever it is...i think health is the most important thing to be concerned... :P

gee thanks babes for all your advice and support!

i went for the 2nd opinion and this time the doctor did have the right equipment, and we did an ultrasound of the breast.

result is that i have uneven breast tissue... so, the doc did explain that a woman in her 20's would have smooth and even breast tissue...then as age catches on, the breast does undergo changes... and the tissues becomes uneven..meaning it is no longer smooth even out in distribution, so, in my case, i had tissue clumping together but not fibroids etc.

phew...i was relieved after her lengthy explaination. this doc is much better than the first one... she even showed me the comparison of both breast.. and explain in detail. nothing was mentioned about `fibroedema' though, so i doubt i have that.

The sadly funny part is, now, when ppl asked me the diagnosis, my simple answer is `i have aging breasts" !! hahaha.... well, i m in my early 30's already..hahah.... but maybe my breast age faster!! :D

I'd like to know whether malignant lumps are hard or soft. And are they usually painful? Coz I just found one on my right side recently and I'm pretty concerned.

My mom went thru an operation last year and she showed me the scars.. pretty scary though.. :(

my doc told me that if u feel the lump on your breast is movable, meaning it could move around when you press it, then it is a lump, and if it is not movable.. then it is cancer.. 8)

I wanted to ask about how the procedure is during operation..

I think you'll need to get a FNAC. They'll use a needle and inject your lump to get a sample from it and from there decide what to do. Normally fidoerma(dont know spell), you'll go thru a minor operation, one day operation. If the lump is moving, mostly it is not harmful. However this thing can grow bigger while some wont grow. Doctor told me that it will never ever ever ever ever ever(that doctor really repeat many time of never ever ever ever ever ever ever) turn into breast cancer.

the best thing is to go and see your OBs and Gyne (or normally we just called them gynaecologists).

its not necessary to go for a needle biopsy so soon lar! its very very painful...and docs will only do it when the preliminary examinations indicate its necessity.

If you are younger than 40 years old, then first, try to check with a breast ultrasound; if above 40 years old, then can do mammogram... if the results from either of this shows your lump is `suspicious', then only opt for the biopsy...

oh, and if its fibroedema... its not cancer.. :)
