David147 0 Report post Posted May 7, 2015 Lotion will burn. Ouch! I don't mean literally burn... but it will feel like burning. The best trick for this is cotton gloves and petroleum jelly at night. You can get white cotton gloves at drug stores. Just before sleeping, slather petroleum jelly on your hands and put the gloves on. It will be uncomfortable for a few minutes but you'll quickly not notice it any longer. You will be amazed at the results. Also, be sure to dry your hands carefully after washing them and once the skin has healed and is no longer cracked, put lotion on them several times a day. Cold air cannot hold much water, so the air in winter is dry. Water evaporates out of your skin - that's how this happens. If you cannot get to a drug store for gloves, put petroleum jelly on your hands... the tops of your hands and fingers, several times a day. You don't want it on the palms, etc., because it's hard to handle things! What you can do is put some on the back of one hand and just rub the backs together as well as the fingers. I hope this is clear. It's a way to distribute it without getting your hands and fingers greasy and having problems handling things. What petroleum jelly does is STOP the evaporation of water from your skin. Most people think it penetrates your skin and moisturizes it, but that's not really the way it works. It simply makes a highly effective seal so your skin can heal and re-moisturize itself.
