Combo-Oily SUPERHYPERSensitive Skin

Recommended Posts

Hello all, this is my first time posting here, hope I'll be able to find some answers for my long-time skin problem. smile.gif

I'm 18 this year, going through 2nd year in college. Throughout secondary school, my face was smooth with the common tiny bumps, although oily, with the occasional pimple or two.

Soon after starting college, things changed, and from then on, no matter what products I used, my skin would have a reaction.

This reaction occurs in cycles:

Phase 1: Skin is perfectly normal
Phase 2: After a period of time using the same product , skin starts getting rough (little bumps appear on chin)
Phase 3: Skin gets dry (Picture) and bumps on skin appear bigger (Picture)
Phase 4: Skin starts flaking and face looks horrible (Picture)

After a few weeks, my skin would go back to Phase 1. Do note that when I get reactions, I usually completely stop using my cleansers and toners, but I do use moisturizer.

The first time I remember this happened was during my 2nd semester in college (August 2008), but prior to that I had been using the VERY SAME cleanser for a long time without reactions. It was the L'oreal White Perfect foam cleanser. The reaction only reached Phase 2, and it was only for a few days. My dad dismissed it as an "allergic reaction" possibly to something I ate.

The second time it happened was in October 2008, and my cousin's girlfriend (who is a beautician) told me it was because I didn't use moisturizer (Moisturizers made my face very oily so I did not use them ever since secondary school). By then it reached Phase 3. I was using The Body Shop's Seaweed range of products.

The third time, which was the WORST, was during Chinese New Year this year, I tried this new cleanser, Vichy Normaderm Anti-Imperfection Hydrating Care, because I was also suffering from acne due to college stress and late nights. The first time I used it, it felt WONDERFUL. But after 3 or 4 cleanses, my skin started to sting during cleansing, and I stopped using it. But it was too late, and the reaction began, this time going all the way to Phase 4.

I stopped using any form of cleanser, and I went to see a skin specialist near my house. She was very lousy, didn't give a good consultation at all, but gave me a white cream to apply on my face after cleansing, and told me to stop using toner and moisturizer, Just the cleanser. By then my skin was already healing and on it's way to Phase 1 again, so I don't think the cream helped much.

I used my brother's The Body Shop Tea Tree Oil foam cleanser for about a month, and I got reactions again.

In March/April, I bought a starter kit for The Body Shop Aloe range of cleanser, toner, day and night moisturizer, which is meant for sensitive skin. At that time, my skin was going through the drying process and was in Phase 4. Usually when I experience drying, cleansers will definitely sting my dry skin, but this one didn't, so I continued using it.

My skin went back to normal as usual, so I thought it was safe to use my L'Oreal White Perfect cleanser again, and I did, but experienced stinging after a few days, so I stopped, my skin was still in Phase 1, nothing had happened yet. I went back to the TBS Aloe products for a week, and the reactions began again, all the way to Phase 4. Unsure about whether it was the Aloe or White Perfect that caused it.

As the products were from a Starter Kit and were very tiny, I finished them after a few weeks. Although the products didn't give me any reactions in the following weeks, they didn't do ANYTHING for my skin either. I still had my acne, and the moisturizer made my face AN OIL SLICK.

I decided to try a new brand, Mom suggested I try Clinique's, as she heard it was very good for sensitive skin. So I went to a Clinique counter in Parkson and the consultant did an analysis of my skin. Even though the answers I gave to her questions pointed my skin to Combination-Dry or Type 2, she touched my face and said it was oily. She recommended the following products to me:

1. Liquid Facial Soap Oily Skin Formula (Combination Oily to Oily Skin)
2. Clarifying lotion 2 (Dry Combination Skin)
3. Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel (Combination Oily to Oily Skin)
4. City Block Sheer Oily-Free Daily Face Protector 25SPF
4. Wash Away Gel Cleanser (For Oiler Skins)

I was very happy with the results after using them for a few times - the cleanser made my skin feel so smooth, and the moisturizer worked wonders, my face was only a teensy bit oily at the end of the day! The sunblock didn't make my face oily either. I was happy.

On the third day, I realized my skin had gotten a little dry, and I was despairing. I suspected the cleanser, so I stopped using it and only used the toner and moisturizer. My skin didn't get any better. Then my mom said that the toner had "exfoliating" properties, and might've stripped the outer layer of my skin. So I gave the cleanser a try again, it didn't sting, even though my skin was already in Phase 3.

So now, I am using the cleanser (only at night) and moisturizer, hopefully things won't get worse.

Right now I'm just really frustrated, why is this happening to my skin? Should I go back to Clinique and ask the consultant? Or should I just see a skin specialist (cousin recommended Dr. Ting in Jalan Imbi)? Or should I just wait and see what happens?

Just when my skin starts getting better, everything goes haywire again. It's always like that sad.gif

Many thanks in advance to anyone and everyone who can help! biggrin.gif

Hi logic-pending,

I advise u to stop all ur current products. Branded products doesn't mean good result.

Just use water to clean ur face for few days. After that, try use a very mild cleanser named "Cetaphil". It is recommended by my skin specialist because im also facing skin dilemma last 2 months.

My skin is sensitive type, i cannot use those commercial products let alone those branded and pricey products endorsed by celebrities. Im using cetaphil and my skin is under control.

I cannot use too much make up, although i didn't really make up unless on special occasion. And i cannot use sunblock, i've tried Clinelle but it causes tiny bumps on my face. (But Clinelle is meant for sensitive skin, but my skin still cannot accept it).

So now i basically clean my face with cetaphil cleanser only, and nothing else. I think u put too much chemical aka burden and also money on ur face already. This is a way ur skin is telling u to give it a rest.

No facial, no scrubbing, no masking, no make up, no prolong sun exposure please ok...

Wishing u good skin! smile.gif

Ur skin sounds sensitive ,because of the stinging sensation.Only wash ur face using live yogurt and moisturise ur face using aloe vera gel(get directly fom the plant).Wash using cold tap water.Skip all ur chemical infused skincare @ the same time.
Try that for @ least one week and see if theres any improvements
Its normal that any skin will experience some peeling @ certain time of the month. This is because ur skin naturally shed off the dead skin cells within the 28 days period.

Good luck! smile.gif

About a year ago, my skin flaked around the mouth/chin area too for a few days and then it'd go back to its normal condition. This cycle happened a few times. Scrubbing away those flakes will only make it worse. Then I switched to Origins Dr Weil (the Mega Mushroom range) cleanser and face cream. Touchwood, no more flakes and irritating skin phases. I love my skin now.

Or perhaps you'd like to try to cleanse your face with extra virgin olive oil and moisturise using aloe vera. Spray with Avene thermal spring water to complete your cleansing regime. Do not irritate your skin by the excessive massaging whilst cleansing. Try not to load anything else onto your face (most notably, makeup) until you are sure that the 4 phases you've mentioned are banished.

Good luck.

I think ur trying to refer to birth control(BC) pills.BC doesnt cause infertility. In fact some BC are known to regulate menses, minimise PMS syndromme and regulate hormones, thus giving u nicer skin complexion.

Yup, I have experienced this before. Just last year actually. I used a product and it caused my face to breakout with contact dermatitis. My skin hasnt been the same ever since ie I'd have to be very selective and careful with whatever products that I use for fear of recurrence, altho at present, my skin is in great condition. I try my very best to stick to a brand I know and am familiar with + read the label/ingredient list whenever I decide to try something new.

Anyhow, I find that when these flare-ups occur, immediately cease using all skin care products. Only wash your face with Cetaphil as suggested by big eyes or u can also try Eubos solid. Do not even apply toner. Dont worry about not using toner when u have these flare-ups because the natural oils on your face is what's gonna help u recover faster. Toning might cause hypersensitivity, esp when u use the wrong one (my 2 cents: Clinique does the WORST toners. They're packed with alcohol and the astringent-like properties are just way too strong!). But just make sure that when u cleanse your skin, cleanse it well. Then apply an aqueous cream or Cetaphil moisturizer or a fragrance + mineral oil free sorbolene moisturizer and just practise this for a whole MONTH, twice daily. Use sunblock ONLY when you're exposed to the sun.

I find that this method helps me A LOT as and when I accidentally use a product which triggers an allergic reaction to my skin which in turn causes tiny bumps and flakes to appear...classic signs of contact dermatitis.

In a nutshell...cleanse with Cetaphil/Eubos, no toner, aqueous/sorbolene cream or Cetaphil moisturizer for a whole month and see if it improves.

Take care wink.gif

Well I don't do any of those, actually! tongue.gif
Oh, you went to a skin specialist? Which one?

@ d3vil doll
Yeah I suppose it's safe to say that it's sensitive, and unfortunately I can't use any yogurt or milk on my face somehow. I tried cleansing with yogurt (straight from the cup) before, but the moment I applied it my skin started to sting! Same goes with milk masks. So I'm not so sure if I should use raw ingredients on my face @_@
Well I don't think you'd call what I have "some" skin peeling right? And I didn't have these problems before, really wonder what triggered them in the first place sad.gif

@ SugarPlum
Was yours as bad as mine? Origins should be pretty pricey as well right? And nope I don't use make-up at all, since I'm still in college smile.gif
Olive oil? Won't that make my skin super oily O.O

@ tinytomato
Well I don't think I'd wanna try taking any pills yet, they cause some side effects right? I heard.
But thanks for your suggestions anyway smile.gif

Wow, you really seem like you know my problem! biggrin.gif May I know what products you're using now?

Hmm, Contact Dermatitis, so THAT'S what it's called.

Yes I get very worried whenever I choose a new product to try, because as of now, I have YET to find a range of products that my skin is 100% comfortable with.

Cetaphil? Where can you get that? Are they pricey?

"Anyhow, I find that when these flare-ups occur, immediately cease using all skin care products."

You mean, stop using current products and use Cetaphi/Eubos instead? And what happens after 1 month? I continue using Cetaphil? Or continue with the previous (in this case, Clinique?)?

And if I HAVE to use sunblock, what remover would you recommend? smile.gif Cause the Clinique consultant gave me a Wash Away Gel Cleanser (for oilier skins. what the heck), and I'm supposed to double-cleanse.

Hope to hear from you soon,

Oh, and thanks for your advice! smile.gif

I was talking about organic natural yogurt the ones Indian Community D.I.Y @ home,nt the commercial ones.
Also aloe vera is known to heal and moisturise damaged skin. Its one of nature best remedy.
And from my previous experience with Clinique,no I'm not fond of their cleanser and toner,Its too drying
Stay away from ur skincare for @ least 1 week and try only natural remedy
All the best to flawless looking skin smile.gif

Hi logic-pending,

The skin specialist that i visited was at Hospital Pantai, Cheras...he is doctor ruban nathan, his clinic is in damansara, but he serves as part time doctor in Pantai Cheras every tuesday and thursday...but u try to change ur skincare routine/products as advised in this forum, cos if u go to skin specialist they will prescribe u with antibiotics/acnotin, like in my case, which is not healthy. sad.gif

Hi Logic-Pending,

My skin around the mouth and chin was as bad as it could get last year smile.gif People could spot the redness and white flakes from at least 10 feet away. Whilst I agree that Origins products are pricey, but I'd say it's a worthwhile investment. As for olive oil, do not use the 100% pure olive oil. Use EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL ("EVOO"). EVOO has been used since the ancient days by women to achieve beautiful and youthful-looking skin. It's not oily like cooking oil - in fact, it really moisturises the face, leaving it soft.

Omg to your last picture where you skin starts to flake. It's too dry. when skin outside layer too dry, your oil gland will be more active producing more oil. It will "boom" one fine day.
My fren have the similar condition like your first picture, the tiny bumps one. Luckily her bumps now dissapeared in 2 weeksttime after she change her skin care . You may refer to her, pinkycotton.

Thanks everyone for your replies and help!

I think I'll skip seeing a skin specialist for now, I do agree that taking pills and all isn't such a good idea.

Will take big eyes's and Teff's advice, and try Eubos or Cetaphil for while, I'll let everyone know how it turns out. smile.gif

Thanks again!

Im sorry about your skin condidtion. I appreciate how frustrating it can be trying out products that dont seem to produce results.
I suspect your hyrolipid balance of your skin is messed up from trying out too many different products. Thats why its sensitive and dry yet producing oil to balance out the dryness. I have the same type of skin sad.gif
There is a product range at Guardian pharmacy called AA Sensitive Skin that will be beneficial for you. Its not very pricey at about RM28-38.
You will need the whole range ie toner, face wash, light moisturiser and *maybe* even the heavier moisturiser. Light moisturiser is for whole face but the heavier moisturiser is for where extra moisturiser is needed for example the cheeks. The product is non comedogenic so it wont clog your pores.
Follow the product range and totally STOP everything else. The product will mediate histamine production that causes redness and stinging. The products will not make your skin sting I assure you. Initially, your skin will peel a little because the previous dry skin will flake off lightly but continue with the regiment and your skin not be so atopic. After 3-4 week, your skin will rebuild its hydolipid balance and cease being so sensitive.
A personal tip, is to to dab with oil absorbing paper after applying the toner and moituriser to eliminate the shine.
The product is very similar to Eucerin Sensitive Skin product range in Germany and works just as good at a fraction of the price.
Hope this helps.

Hey girl, if your skin is usaully smooth only that its oily, that means your underlayer (not surface area) skin lacks hydration causing oil to be produced more than usual.

If you suspect that you have sensitive skin then use only products thats formulated for sensitive skin. First of all, sensitive skin doesn't only come genetically, it can grow due to harsh skin products and cause your surface layer to thin and peel.

Now the thing you should do is wait till your skin go back to phase one, then wait for a few more days, den start your skincare regime for sensitive skin.

Lucky you not kena skin allergy. Its so pain and so sian that you wish you don't have to go out and let ppl see the very red and pimply face..

Hey babe,

I recommend you to stop using the products you are using at the moment.
Perhaps it is not suitable for you.
Branded does not mean it is good. You are paying for their advertising fee and rental fee.

I got to know this product from US. It has just launched in Malaysia not long ago.
I find it very good.
My skin was quite bad before. Pimples pop up everytime my period came and stuff like that.
Therefore, I have attended a few classes of the skin care course, and get to know this product.

This product is basically made from natural plant ingredients.
It is safe for any users to use.
And it deep cleanse into your skin, and yet without drying it.
Moreover, it gives you moisture to your skin.

Besides, the grapeseed extract may help you too.
Coz it has antioxidant in it.
Antioxidant will help you to prevent your skin from free radicals, which includes sunlights, dusty environments, and so on.

Do hit me back, if you are interested to know more.
