Cracked lips are a symptom in which the lips are dry, peeling or chapped. Breaks may appear on the surface, and the lips may become painful and may bleed.
In most cases, cracked lips are not caused by a serious condition and do not pose any health risks. Common causes of cracked lips include dry or cold weather, sunburn, wind exposure, licking your lips, and breathing through your mouth. In some cases, mild conditions such as the common cold, dehydration, and nutritional deficiencies may also result in cracked lips.
Cracked lips are rarely associated with a medical emergency. However, cracked lips may be a sign of dehydration.

How to prevent or cure Cracked Lips?
- The most simple and vital treatment would be intake lots of water; less water results in dryness in both the skin and the lips, keeping the body hydrated is very important.
- DO not lick your lips. Licking your lips makes them feel better, but when the saliva evaporates the pain can increase!
- Apply lip balm or petroleum jelly on the lips. This will help them remain smooth. Do not forget to apply it before going to bed
- Avoid 'flavored' lip balms, which may encourage you to lick your lips.
- Protect your lips from the sun as you would the rest of your skin.
- Rub a slice of cucumber on your lips, this will help cure dry and chapped lips
- Intake of foods rich in vitamin A such as carrots, tomatoes, green leafy vege
- For woman who put on lipstick, apply moisturizer-based lipstick on the lips. Do not put on excessive lipstick and allow the lips to breathe.
- Avoid wetting the lips with the tongue. It makes the lips dark, and lose the moisture.

I suffer from eczema on my lips. I am super sensitive towards any lip products. My lips pale, cracked and smtimes bleed. So, I went to the dermatologist specialist and I was advice to:

1. avoid lip licking- the saliva contain enzyme which breaks down food particle..imagine that on your mouth!

2. use uncolored lip balm or petroleum jelly (i use this since I'm allergic to anything else)

3. say bye-bye to lip gloss- it is one of the main cause to dry lips

4. your choice of toothpaste also may contribute to dry lips- use the regular one

5. when you eat fruits cut it in small portion to avoid it from touching your lips

The doctor prescribed me Eumovate to apply on my lips twice a day and use petroleum jelly in between. I just use this not more than a month but I found that my lips isn't dry anymore. So, I hope this helps!
