The Coconut Tree has been commonly referred to not only as the “Tree of Life", but also as the "Jewel of the Tropics"; "the King of Trees"; "Tree of Abundance"; "Tree of Heaven" and the “Signature Tree of The Tropics". In Sanskrit, coconuts are called "Kalpa Vriksha", which means: "the tree that gives all that is necessary for living".
The palm tree has a long history of providing man with useful materials for his daily life. None is more important than the oils obtained from the palm nut. Coconut and palm kernel oils were recognized as health oils in Ayurvedic medicine almost 4000 years ago. The same health effects were also found in Sanskrit medicine for mother's milk."

Numerous studies have clearly demonstrated that coconut oil has a neutral effect on cholesterol levels. The reason coconut oil does not adversely affect cholesterol is because it is composed primarily of medium-chain fatty acids (MCFA). These fatty acids are different from those commonly found in other food sources and are burned almost immediately for energy production, and so they are not converted into body fat or cholesterol to the degree other fats are and do not affect blood cholesterol levels.

Studies on people who live in tropical climates and who have a diet high in coconut oil are healthier, have less heart disease, cancer and colon and prostate problems…The medium chain fatty acids and monoglycerides found primarily in coconut and palm kernel oils and mothers milk have miraculous healing power. It is rare in the history of medicine to find substances that have such useful properties and still be without toxicity or even harmful side effects."

Coconut oil provides additional benefits:
It strengthens the immune system and promotes optimal development of the brain and nervous system.Brain tissue is very rich in complex forms of fats. The experiment (around 1978) in which pregnant mice were given diets containing either coconut oil or unsaturated oil showed that brain development was superior in the young mice whose mothers ate coconut oil. Because coconut oil supports thyroid function, and thyroid governs brain development, including myelination, the result might simply reflect the difference between normal and hypothyroid individuals.  It protects against cancer and heart disease, and promotes healthy bones.

Another remarkable thing about coconut oil is that it can help you lose weight. For this reason, coconut oil can quite literally be called the world's only natural, low calorie fat. All fats, whether they are saturated or unsaturated, from a cow or from corn, contain the same amount of calories. The MCFA in coconut oil, however, are different. They contain a little less. Because of the small size of the fatty acids that make up coconut oil, they actually yield fewer calories than other fats. Coconut oil has at least 2.56% fewer calories per gram of fat compared with that of long-chain fatty acids (LCFA). This means that by using coconut oil in place of other oils, your calorie intake is less.

This is one fat that diabetics can eat without fear. That fat is coconut oil. Not only does it not contribute to diabetes but it helps regulate blood sugar, thus lessening the effects of the disease.

Finally, coconut oil seems to be the best fat for ensuring the proper uptake of omega-3 fatty acids into the tissues.
