good dermatologist

Recommended Posts

Hi people,

Just to share. I've been to MANY dermatologists in the past few weeks, looking for a knowledgeable doctor who can actually help treat/cure my skin problems. Now, I'm not talking about aesthetic doctors, I'm talking about proper skin specialists who look into treating a skin problem, not trying to make your skin glow etc etc.

The 2 main doctors I'd like to share about are Dr Ruban Nathan at Wisma Perintis (I think it's called that) and Dr Koh Chuan Keng at Damansara Utama.

First off, don't go to Dr Ruban unless you're a vain person who's just looking to spend thousands on trying to look beautiful. In other words, this doc is a money-minded fella who does not have your best interest at heart. I saw him for a problem I had and he wanted to prescribe Accutane, which I already had, so he tried to sell me lipbalm! And he dismisses the problems that are bothering you and instead tries to sell you his laser treatment for any other thing he finds on your face. He's not very patient or anything and I've heard that he's only famous because of his dad, whom I've seen time and again mentioned on every forum, Dr Nathan at PKNS.

So many things I can say about what I've observed... his clinic does not look like a clinic but a hotel lobby. So furbished and posh. (Where do you think he gets the money for all that?) His clientelle seems to be the richer folks at Dsara Heights. His accolades are hung everywhere and even online to advertise himself. Yet he didn't give me a good diagnosis nor treatment on my problem and seemed to target other skin problems which don't even bother me!

Dr Koh on the other hand, I found to be humble and patient and knowledgeable. This is one of the first doctors who not only acknowledged my problem but was able to give me treatment options, willing to answer the long list of questions I had and able to answer my questions satisfactorily. Also, I've read a bit of medical reports on skin care and his advice actually coincides with these, instead of other docs who don't seem to even think of these. He sells Accutane in the proper packaging and at a reasonable price. His clinic seems to be set up to treat skin diseases instead of aesthetics. To me, that's important. I have a skin condition that really bothers me, and everywhere I look, it's aesthetic clinics, so hard to find a good dermatologist who's actually there to treat, not to sell. Who fixes your problem, not feeds your greed to look beautiful.

This looks like an advertisement, but I've been sourcing online for a good dermatologist for so long and can't seem to find any recommendations which met my requirements. This post of mine is to help others like myself, who feel you have a skin problem that disfigures, and are looking for real help, not just aesthetic.

On the other hand, if you're looking at lasers and aesthetics, I think Dr Jesswinder at Dermlaze in DU and Dr Christina Cheah are good options. Both were very nice and seemed to care about their patients. The difference I found is that, nice as she is, Dr Christina still tries to sell =P Dr Jesswinder on the other hand does not strike me as a salesman, but someone who's there to address your problems, too.

Hope this helps =) My only apprehension of posting this is fear of finding myself fighting with more patients for the doctor's time.

Aya Brea & Cas - I'm not condemning Dr Ruban/Ruben. Condemn is quite a strong word, no? I'm sharing feedback on what I think of him. This is a forum to share isn't it? For example, I read a post that Dr Ting in Imbi seemed rather unfriendly, so it saved me the trouble of going there to check it out. I'm only posting this because it's been so exasperating going doc to doc and paying all that consultancy fees to find one whom I found good. If you want to pay 100+ consultation to try out this doc, please go ahead. I didn't mean to sound rude but at that time I was quite upset after my visit to him. And of cos I said no to all the stuff Dr Ruban tried to sell me. But consultation alone was exp and I thought I'd share what I thought. Lip balm - I can always buy my own from pharmacy, everyone knows Accutane causes dryness, a doc doesn't need to sell me lipbalm for that =) And Dr Koh gives free Vaseline in a small container with every Accutane he sells... so you see the big difference I felt.

Also, yes its for looks, but I think what I was trying to say was that the problem I have can be disfiguring and rare la... Not like wrinkles or pimples.. a bit more weird. So it was quite depressing and I was trying to find a good doc to treat diseases, not so much aesthetics. Dr Koh doesn't have all those new high-tech lasers so I wouldn't recommend for aesthetics, but more for like eczema, psoriasis etc.

Btw Aya Brea - the microneedling results look good. My friend went also and said it helped her.

forever - So sorry I don't log in here so didn't see your question. Dr Koh charged RM 40 for first time consultation... hope this is not too late =P

Hi Meli7a, thx for the sharing..its really helpful. wub.gif . For my experience, i do see Dr.Ting since Mar'09 because of allergic on face. His medicine and cream is good but i feel he is kind of money minded as he keep asking me to go back to visit him once a month. I have to take the pills for a month but finally i decided not to complete it. I am now using Fancl skin care and i found my skin is not too dry now. clapping.gif

Some dr really money minded that we can't deny. But there are reasons that they keep asking u visit once a month. They might need to monitor ur face till fully recover & never recurrence.

I had one colleague seeing a dr at TTDI. She told me dr ask her visit once a month for monitoring & also take the pills every month which cost RM300. And she need to visit dr bout 10 months, as the dr say its a course. n this dr was introduced by another colleague which i heard having same problem last time. She did recover & never recurrence again. SOme more now she only using cleanser at Watson, nothing else she apply.

Hi Golden Ghost - Dr Koh at Damansara Utama, Uptown... beside that Peter & Jane car workshop place. 03 7725 8437. Hope he can help you too.

Hi anson - =) Ya I know what you mean when you feel like the doc cares more about making profit out of you than actually treating you. If you have dry and sensitive skin, Cetaphil face wash is good also... and cheap!

eveparadise - I think we share the same doc =)

Hi meli7a, I have got his address from the internet, thanks anyway...

I have visited Dr Ranjit once, he is not money minded, his creams doesnt work on me...but i find he is a good doctor, he refused to give me antibiotics as my problem is not serious..

On the other hand, Dr Christina Cheah (please not that she is not even a dermatologist, but only a general practitioner), very money minded although friendly...kept pushing me for microdermabrasion and Vit C injections then pushed me to change my full set of facial products..but I think it is the antibiotics she gave me that works...

Hi. I think you can get Cetaphil from the pharmacies around? Guardian should have it or Caring Pharmacy. If you're willing to pay more, Avene is a good product as well for sensitive skin. They have this in the big pharmacies.

As for derms, yea I will recommend Dr Koh in Damansara Utama or Dr Jesswender from Dermlaze clinic. Dr Jesswender's very nice and he's got a lot of the new FDA lasers. His consultation is free.

Hope this helps.

Yeap im going to Dr Ranjit as well for my terrible breakouts. Well now, u can make an appointment 3 days earlier, in dat case u can see him faster and dont have to wait long.Yeap the Roaccutane he's giving is original and he doesnt really prescribe generic accutane. So far, the result has been good, only left scars.I only suffer dry lips and skin on certain area's( most common side effects when ur under accutane)

Try me... Dr Ranjit used to be a very good Dr. But not nowadays,i heard so many bad things about him from my friends all. He does Botox for my friend and it seem her eyes become one smaller than the other one! He dare to tell my friend that is very comman thing to happened after jap. WHAT???????????????? My friend said he must be too old for doing all that.

Dr Jas got a skin clinic in Damansara Utama oppisite starbucks , the clinic very green colour one.. hes very experienced and charge very resonable one..

Hi, I like to comment on this from my own personal experience. Dr. Jesswinder is indeed a very friendly doctor but I don't feel like he give personal attention to his customer, especially after treatment session. He left it all to his assistant, who is not even a nurse but just a helper. All the explanation on how to use the prescribed cream are done by the girl, not the doctor himself. Also, I feel like he doesn't explain thoroughly on the treatments. I went in for laser treatment for my eye pigmentation (which didn't work, btw) and there was no further follow-ups by him after my final treatment finished. Very disappointed actually.

Hi Anson,

Sorry, haven't logged on in a while.. in case you don't have the info, his clinic is in Uptown. The block that is at the back of RHB Bank. Facing outwards, and it's beside the Brother Peter car workshop.

Oh and his consultation for first time is RM 40 I think. Edited by meli7a

Although Dr Koh is an honest doctor, but he does not seem to be as detail..he doest not offer other alternatives available....to me, he is the type of doctor who will jump to Accutane...it is always better to seek advice from a second doctor...Yes, his consultation & medication is reasonable...

hey all,

just stumbled upon this post whilst searching for a good dermatologist in kl/pj area. i have personally tried roaccutane, prescribed by my current dermatologist. however, she gave me this medication only after trying out other options such as topical creams, wash and antibiotics. in total it was after a few months before she started me on this. and she also did a blood test a month after i started medication (it was either a month after, or before she prescribed it) to ensure that the liver function was not impaired; or to make sure that my body was not reacting adversely to this strong drug.

she only uses the original and not the generic drug and she also gives the meds in the original box that it comes from. i've finished my course abt a year ago. the acne has basically stopped...but i still get pimples esp before my period. then it goes away and the skin is clear for the next few weeks. the skin is def less oily than before but it is still relatively oily compared to those people with very good skin condition.

anyways, just wanted to share my experience, if anyone was interested. i'm currently looking for another dermatologist for another problem (non acne related) and just wanted to seek 2nd opinion. so if anyone has any recommendations, please do let me know. thanks!
