work as an ads talents

Recommended Posts

would like to ask, as talents, how do they get pay? right aft the job is done, or months later? as well, mind to share, usually, how much do they get for a shoot?

hi makeupjunk... actually there is no straight answer to your questions, so it's gonna be quite hard to answer you.

WHEN DO AD TALENTS GET PAID?

  • if you're an EXTRA (meaning keh-leh-feh), and your fee is RM100 or below, DEMAND to be paid on the spot ;) (for extras, it's usually pay immediately at the end of the shoot, unless the fee is quite high)
  • currently in Malaysia it's normal to be waiting around 3 months before you'll get paid ... the max you should wait should be 6 months... start chasing if you still haven't hear anything after 3 months!!
  • HOWEVER, if you're represented by an agency, sometimes your agency might pay you first, either immediately after the shoot, or within 1 month

The thing to note is, your pay/payment terms is whatever the agreement is between you and your agency, or between you and whoever hire you. So ALWAYS ask

  1. how much is the pay
  2. when will you get paid

BEFORE you even agree to go for casting or shoot... no point wasting everybody's time if the pay/payment terms does not meet your expectations.

The whole simplified process used to go like this:

client has a campaign - ad agency organizes the entire campaign and appoints a production house to do the shoot - ad agency will contact talent agencies for talents and call for casting - talent agency will submit their talents for casting - talents goes for casting, and if selected, go for shoot - talent agency will pay talent - ad agency will pay production house and talent agency - client will pay ad agency

Now the part about payment is this - there used to be a booking fee involved where ad agency will pay talent agency a booking fee upon confirmation of talent, and talent agency will pay the talent a booking fee to confirm the talent for a shoot. The balance payment is usually paid to the talent agency upon shoot completion, and talents expect to get paid immediately after the shoot, or within a few days. If talent has many regular bookings with the talent agency then there might be a monthly settlement of outstanding payment. HOWEVER, these days you might not get a booking fee, and you might not get paid until 3 months after the shoot is completed.

HOW MUCH ARE AD TALENTS PAID?

The answer is - it varies between what type of ads, what role does the talent play, what is the usage, what is the duration, what is the coverage, is there any contract, etc

  • TYPE of ads meaning - print? video? - print refers to photoshoots for newspaper / magazine / flyers / posters / banners/ buntings / billboards / web / etc; video usually refers to TVCs but might also be promo video / instructional video / etc
  • ROLE means - extra? featured extra? supporting talent? main talent? celebrity talent? (think actors - everyone gets paid at different rates depending on budget and what role the talent plays in the production)
  • ROLE in video production also depends on - acting / non-acting? speaking / non-speaking? The more you have to do, the higher the pay.
  • USAGE means - where and how many different types of media will the ad appear in - eg for print - only in newspaper / magazine OR inclusive of all ad media such as flyers / posters / billboards / web etc? more usage = higher pay
  • DURATION means - how long is the ad going to be used - 1 month? 3 months? 6 months? 1 year? forever? longer duration = higher pay
  • COVERAGE means - what geographical region will the ad be shown - local? overseas? asian market? european market? US market? Australia & New Zealand market? 1 country? 2 countries? 3 countries? etc etc. Wider / more coverage = higher pay
  • NO CONTRACT means - you are not restricted from appearing in any other ads. No contract = minimum / market rate
  • CONTRACT (NON-EXCLUSIVE) refers to - whether you need to sign a contract saying that you are not allowed to be a talent for a competing brand within a certain time frame (usually the DURATION of the ad campaign). More restrictions / longer time frame = higher pay
  • CONTRACT (EXCLUSIVE) means - you sign a contract stating that you will not be a talent for any other brands (be it competing or totally unrelated brand) within a certain time-frame. You'll get this at the highest level, and it seldom happens - basically they will have to pay you every month cos effectively you only work for them. These are usually multi-million dollars contracts renewable yearly and almost always involve highly reputable celebrities / stars

as you can see, there are many factors that determine how much a talent is paid :)

as a GUIDELINE... here are some of the average rates these days, although at the end of the day YOU determine how much you are worth as a talent given the factors above

  • EXTRAS - the lowest paid in any ad production, start at RM100 PER DAY of shooting
  • FEATURED EXTRAS / SUPPORTING TALENTS - start at RM400 PER DAY of shooting
  • MAIN TALENT - start at RM1000 PER DAY of shooting
  • CELEBRITY TALENT / SPOKESPERSON - well, you're the star, you get to demand your price ;)

note: PER DAY of shooting means for every single day you're required to be at the shoot location - be it a 1hr shoot or a 8hr shoot or a 12hr shoot, it is still considered as ONE DAY. Also note that you don't get paid for casting.
