  1. Hello BananaEagle! Yes, this is my entire proposal. This year, the format is quite different from the previous years. There are no TV appearances as the entire contest is conducted online. I wish I could add more to the proposal but this is the format set by the organisers and there was a word limit too for the proposal. I decided to go ahead with this idea because I am currently a teacher myself. I graduated last year with a degree in the Teaching of English as Second Language (TESL) and I have been involved in early childhood education for about 6 years now. I have worked at childcare centers and seen for myself the basics of the business. My interest however, is in language development. I have always been intrigued by how children acquire multiple languages. As an English teacher at a local primary school, I am in contact with young children on daily basis and I do see many wonderful talents in them, especially in the areas of language. I believe that with proper guidance and support, these talents could be developed further. This is where the idea of a childcare centre which focuses on creative language development comes into mind. I am also currently pursuing Masters in ESL (English as Second Language), through which I hope I can gain more knowledge about second language acquisition
  2. This is my proposal (copyrighted). Thanks for reading! Internal Child Development and Creative Learning Centre. This center offers quality childcare services for children ages 2-5. The center will seek to operate within the building of a commercial organization. For example, the center might be set up within Dataran Maybank in Bangsar, Menara Telekom in Kerinchi or the Exxon Mobile headquarters near Kuala Lumpur City Centre, KLCC. Offering internal childcare services exclusive for the employees of a particular organization, the center will give working parents the opportunity to play greater roles in their children's development through lunch-hour visitations and short breastfeeding breaks. The center will also play a part in social services by providing training and subsequently teaching positions to single mothers and women under the care of shelter homes. FEATURES The center offers the following features: 1. Professional childcare (full day) inclusive of three meals, shower and early childhood education (Bahasa Malaysia, English, Mathematics, Science, Arts, Physical Activities) 2. Emphasis on the development of English as a second language. 3. Gradual development of multiple intelligences through creative activities such as dancing, painting and acting. 4. An environment that promotes children's literature through the use of poems and short stories in daily activities. 5. Lunch-break visitations in a comfortable space. 6. A private cubicle for breastfeeding to cater for mothers of infants. 7. Located within the same building, this internal daycare center provides convenience for mothers to drop-off and pick-up their children. 8. Limited number of learners to ensure childcare services of the highest quality. Age restriction of 2-5 will also be imposed to ensure that the center does not deviate from its original aim of providing quality early childcare services. 9. On-going in-house training for teachers and teacher aides. Recruitment drives will be conducted at shelter homes registered with the relevant authority.Non-governmental organizations working with single mothers will also be invited to nominate suitable candidates.Ratio of teacher to learners not to exceed 1: 12 and each class is to be assisted by a teacher aide. 10. Quality teaching and learning materials that specifically promote the development of creative language and multiple intelligences. TARGET MARKET Young parents working in the city areas who are professionals in their respective fields. These are young parents who want their children to develop holistically and who seek to play active roles in the process, despite their demanding careers. APPEAL The main appeal of the center lies in its delivery of quality childcare and holistic early childhood development within close vicinity of parents' workplace. Having an internal daycare center located within the same building will allow young parents a better opportunity to pursue their career without compromising their roles as parents. Most importantly, they will be able to have more contact hours with their children. The center will also appeal to professional parents who value the importance of holistic education. At the center, young learners will develop physically, emotionally, spiritually and intellectually. They will be exposed to music, arts, cookery, physical activities, nature, scientific and mathematical explorations as well as the joys of creative language through the use of poetry, short stories and drama. They will also be demonstrated and guided with moral values that mirror the Asian culture. The learners will also be exposed to life skills such as expressing and controlling anger, forgiving and apologizing, attributing successes and failures and showing appreciation for others. The center also places emphasis on its quality teaching team and materials as part of its appeal. The center will have both child minders and teachers. While the teacher will provide direct instructions and demonstrations of concepts, the child minder will ensure that learners' basic needs such as meals, cleanliness and safety are met. Child minders and teachers without experience or qualifications are to be given at least 6 months training before being allowed to teach. These to-be teachers will be teacher aides in the duration and will also attend in-house lectures and seminars. As part of the center's aim is to provide assistance to single mothers and women under the care of shelter homes, regular recruitment will be conducted at registered shelter homes and also with the help of non-governmental associations working to assist single mothers. Our clients will be assured that recruitment process will be stringent and that subsequent training given will ensure that their children receive the best in childcare. In fact, our clients will play indirect roles in helping single mothers and women in shelter homes achieve financial independence. The biggest obstacle possibly faced by the center is pitching the idea of an internal daycare center to the selected organizations. These organizations will be selected based on the number of staff, its male-female staff ratio and availability of suitable space to be converted into a daycare center. These organizations will then be briefed on the aims of the internal daycare center and how it will benefit the organization. Most importantly, it will be emphasized that with an internal daycare center, employers will be able to expect an increased commitment from its staff members. Eventually, this will lead to better productivity for the organization. COMPETITION The center will compete mostly with existing daycare centers which are mostly located in the housing areas. Parents who have already enrolled their children at these daycare centers may be reluctant to shift to a new daycare centre as registration fees may have been paid and also for fear of taking their children out of a familiar environment to a new one. Some parents may have doubts about the facilities that an internal daycare center is able to provide. Nevertheless, the center is entering an untapped market by offering a holistic child development program. My qualifications as an overseas trained English teacher will be used to illustrate the teaching standard at the center. Also, the location of the daycare center will entice young professional parents who wish to have more contact hours with their children. The center also faces competition from individual child minders working from home. These child minders probably charge lower fees but are unable to provide systematic education. PRICING RM550 for full day childcare and development services (8am-5pm). Extra hours will be charged at RM35/hour. Fees are per child, and are inclusive of three wholesome meals, a shower bath, lesson materials, art and craft materials. PROJECTIONS The startup cost for the center is estimated at about RM20,000. This includes minor renovations of the premise, furniture and furnishings as well as teaching and learning materials. The center will work towards a minimum enrolment of 20 children within the first year. With RM550 monthly charges, this will bring an estimated of RM11,000 income each month. The center will run on a monthly expenditure of approximately RM7,800. This covers premise rental, utility bills, food and bath supplies and wage. As the center is leasing its space from the company that owns the building itself, rental rates will be negotiated to be at RM1,000 or less a month. The center requires only one large room with an attached bathroom and a pantry to run its operations. With 20 children, the center will be operated by three child minders, a domestic helper and I as the teacher. As a graduate teacher myself, I will be able to take up the responsibility of teaching at the center. About RM 2,200 will be paid as wage for child minders and the domestic helper. Food expenses for 20 children and 4 staff members are expected to reach RM3000 a month. RM500 will be placed aside for utility bills and another RM300 for learning materials. By the end of the first year, the center would have made a gross income of RM132,000, bringing gross profit to approximately RM38,400. Enrolment is expected to grow by 20 percent each year. In the second year, the center is expected to make a gross income of RM158,400. If an additional child incurs an additional of RM250 on the center’s monthly expenses the center’s monthly expenses will increase to about RM8,800. By the end of Year 2, the center will be able to rake in a gross profit of RM52,800. Within 5 years, the center will operate with a minimum of 40 children, 5 child minders, 2 teachers including myself and two domestic helpers. The annual gross income will total RM270,600. Given the increase in the number of staff, the possibility of inflation and the increase in wage, prices of food and learning materials, the cost for running the center will probably increase by 80 percent from the cost it incurs in the first year. Based on this projection, in the fifth year, the center will probably run on an annual of expenditure of RM168,480. The annual gross profit for the center will then be at approximately RM102,120. The success of the center is fundamentally determined by its enrolment. A higher enrolment will bring a higher income to the center. To encourage increase in enrolment, the center will deliver its core service; to provide quality childcare and to develop young learners into holistic individuals. The center will communicate regularly with the parents on their children’s progress and the center will also offer free parenting talks to all parents working in the building.

  9. Dear fellow dress addicts, Hope it's still not too late to wish everyone Happy New Year! 2007 was an amazing year for BreathingCloset...thanks to you folks out there who have given your support and encouragement! Sorry I was not able to bring in new dresses for the Christmas season...had to concentrate on my final semester at uni LOL. But BreathingCloset WILL be back REAL soon. New arrivals are expected to be in by next week (fingers crossed) and I promise we will see more individual designs, quirky touches and impressive quality. For 2008, BreathingCloset is looking Down Under for inspiration, the simplest reason being their weather (especially in Brisbane) is very similar to ours and that their crazy-funky-cool fashion is one that I would like to see more of in Kuala Lumpur. So as preparatory to the many new, GORGEOUS arrivals to come, I am holding a clearance on existing stock. Take RM5 off the already-discounted prices and if purchases exceed RM70, postage within Malaysia is FREE! Take care and talk soon! Much love, Trish.
  10. If you are in Klang Valley, try kite-flying at Taman Metropolitan Kepong (a lake garden) . A good, basic kite costs only RM5. You could have an ice-cream after that and just sit for a long chat or lie on the grass (as of today, the park is still clean) and do cloud-gazing =)

    Promod

Nicer and cheaper than Topshop? Ha! Already a good reason to visit! =)
  13. True. Minis do make the legs appear longer, especially when paired with towering heels or wedges. But I have seen girls with chubby legs wearing super short minis and this is not pretty! Minis draw attention to the legs so if they aren't exactly the part of your body that you would like to highlight, avoid them at all costs.
  14. Exactly! As expected,I think Banana Republic in KLCC is overpriced that it has become somewhat a 'premium' brand when originally it is all about affordability. That said, I miss TARGET too!
  15. There are many boutiques in Bangsar (Jalan Telawi) that carry handpicked dresses. They stock only 1-2 pieces per design. It's best that you take a day off and check out every boutique there. Have fun!
