i will be attending a formal indian wedding this weekend and i was thinking of making use on one of my many sarees which ive never touched before. dunno why i keep asking my mom to buy them for me whenever she's in india but i feel that sarees are just so elegant, dont you think so?

the thing is, i have forgotten how to tie a saree as ive only attended the class once, many years ago. however, i've managed to google a few good "how to tie a saree" sites and i thought i'd like to share with you guys as well.

if there are any of you babes, especially indian babes out there, please kindly help me with my little dilemma here okay? or are there any shops that will tie for you with a small fee? after looking at the sites, i am a little more confident but would still prefer a professional to be tying it for me. teeheehee. laughing.gif

here are the sites i've managed to find through my best online friend, google.com. rolleyes.gif

http://www.utsavsarees.com/pages/wearsari.htm

http://www.shijucreation.com/wearingasari. htm

http://www.sarisafari.com/howtowear.html

http://www.varietysilks.com/blouse. htm

p/s: i believe ive been told before that folding the sarees over your right/left shoulders convey different meanings. so it should be over my left shoulder for a wedding rite? and wearing pottus (the little stickies on your forehead) should not be red as that is only for married ladies, ya?

tIcKLeMe oo you used to be able to tie a saree yourself? impressive! i've never tied a saree myself before, only wore a saree once some time ago, that too got a help from a professional. You can check out the pic under photography showoff: under the bf etc category. To tie a saree is quite difficult la and can get a bit annoying although the end results are gorgeous. Will you be wearing a saree blouse? If i were you i'd go for a halter or spaghetti strap top, that's the new modern way. There's a shop in bfields that charges RM25 for the service and she does a good job. takes about 30 mins or so to tie it. 0163721101 Ms Viji, try contacting her and see how it goes. It's always good to see non-indians wear a saree coz they look real good in it. The red pottu is only worn by women who are married and this indicates to other men that they're already taken. go for the bindhis, they come in different shapes and sizes, you can get them at masjid india for less than RM8. And over the right or left shoulder doesn't really matter, it's up to your prefrence. Hope this helps and don't forget to post up pics of you in a saree. Cheers babe!

I wore a sari for my company's annual dinner once, I asked an Indian colleague to help me with it.
I can still roughly remember how to put it on but I didn't realise that there were different meanings for leaving the sari on either side of the shoulders.

cas, thank you! i was hoping you would reply.

i have plenty of bindhis as i wear them to clubbing and all (lol, i thought they were all called pottus) and yesh, they are looovely! biggrin.gif

rm25? that's great!!! thank you very much cas. you've been very very helpful!

p/s: i tried tying the saree again and i failed miserably. hahaha. i guess it takes at least two to tie it properly esp for newbies like me. i couldnt really tie it myself back then, but i could definitely tie neater and nicer than i can now. haha. thanks a lot again! biggrin.gif

traclyn, there's also 'ready-made' sari... You give the tailor your sari, then she'll take the measurements & sew it..

the pleats part will be like a skirt with hooks at the waist, then the extra cloth will be like attached to this skirt.. So which means, it will look like Step 5 in the picture you posted..

so you just go one more round around your body (Step 6) and then drape it on your shoulder (Step 7)

Hope you get what I'm trying to say coz its a bit hard to explain unsure.gif

i don't know if they have it here in malaysia, I sewed mine in singapore. Pretty cool - less hassle & saves time!

smile.gif good luck in finding someone...would probably save time and having to travel.

Erm, my pic... can see in my profile, I chose to wear the sari coz I previously bought it in Nepal for about RM15 and never wore it, and then my annual dinner's theme was to wear something orange.
I used a halter backless top for it... I think I prefer modern tops as opposed to the sari blouses available but make sure to chose something that suits your tastes!

wah... ur mum bought it so cheap in India.

I wore saree once and was helped by my boy's aunt. I brought them shopping in masjid india then after they bought it back home they tried it ON ME instead.

the photo was not scanned nor digital... so I cant show.. but they said saree look good for any fairer skin people like us, chinese.

most of the saree blouse is tailored made but also canwear modern wan like tube or halter its really up to u. just wear anything that u feel comfy. dunforget the underskirt before u tie saree!

my boy's family been expecting me to wear saree to go for their function last yr but I turn it down cos its not the time yet. cos he wish to see me wear on our real engagement day.

gonna take a long time to actually master it man.

p/s: no worries. am gonna post the pix. i shall cross my fingers and hope everything goes well this weekend. smile.gif thanks babes! smile.gif

hehehe... first time ma, of coz make mistake. I'm worse, my colleague showed me beforehand how to tie one. But on the day itself, I was late and rushed to tie it up. I did it rather simply and it was all coming loose... I think it must have looked kinda bad coz the moment I stepped into Shangri-la, one of the workers there saw me and came up to me and asked if I needed help in tying it again tongue.gif *shy oni*
Her style of tying was different, fancier version... I think she pro dee. She's Chinese but I think the clothes provided to her by the hotel was a sari so she probably wears it often...
